Flag football was the sport of choice this year for D.J. and James, mostly because tackle football is on the "no" list at our house. The Spring season was iffy for D.J. because there were not enough 12 year old boys who signed up to play, but since he was still 11 in the Spring, the Rec Center allowed him to play with the 9-11-year-olds. D.J. was quite happy about this and enjoyed a clear height advantage over most of the 11-year-olds and he had the most experience of anybody on the team. This also meant the he was in the same age group as James and their teams would end up playing together. Unfortunately, Mom and Dad didn't get to see them play against each other, as that game was the same day as the Tour de Cure, but Granna got to watch this game and was thoroughly entertained and amazed by both boys' skill and talent.
Come rain, come shine, the game must go on! Unless there is lightening.
D.J. was very pleased to play quarterback often in the Spring. In the fall he was moved to a different team, in which the coach rotated all the boys in all positions. This happened to be James' team! So Mom and Dad enjoyed only going to one game every Saturday instead of two!
James was a fierce competitor, always with a game face on and immersed in the game, sometimes telling other players what they should be doing.
During James's games in the Spring, Spencer and D.J. decided to play Magic the Gathering to hold their attention and show semi-support.
The last game of the fall season was played against a team we refer to as "Wallace," because their coach didn't want to use the uniforms the Rec Center gave them, he had special jerseys made, all with the number 17 on them (James called them the teenagers) and the name "Wallace" on the back. Their team could be heard yelling before the game while doing jumping jacks, "What day it is? - GAME DAY!" The coach of the Wallace team was a pretty serious flag football coach, as was his defensive coach, offensive coach, substitution coach and AV specialist. For the last game of our season, the AV specialist had an areal camera to take film for the Wallace team to review later. This had never been done before for flag football and Mark and I just chuckled about it most of the game. We chuckled a bit more when our team handily beat the Wallace team. What is that saying? Pride goeth before the fall, or something? Anyway, it was a good year for flag football with good coaches that helped the kids learn and participate.
